His father was also singer and member of the group, James Wilson and the Gospelairs. He studied at the University of South Carolina where he received his BA in Political Science and History with the intention of becoming an attorney. While there, he sang with Carolina Alive and had the good fortune of being a performer at President Reagan's second Inagural Ball, performing background concert vocals for Foreigner and singing with his good friend Darius Rucker of Hooty and the Blowfish. Thomas then decided he needed professional training as an actor and attended Temple University in Philadelphia where he received his MFA in acting. While studying here, he made his professional stage debut as Oedipus in "Oedipus the King" at the Wilma Theatre. His work at the Freedom Repertory Theatre included Joseph in "Black Nativity" for which he received a Barrrymore Award nomination (Philadelphia's area award for excellence in the theatre).
