Born into a military family in Huntsville, Alabama -- his father was an army vet who had served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, while his mother held a somewhat mysterious job in the Department of Defence -- Reg E. Cathey spent much of his early childhood living on a rural farmhouse in Germany. There, he watched American TV shows dubbed into German and first became theatre-struck at the age of nine after attending a USO performance of "Guys and Dolls". That same year, he also took up playing the saxophone. That he became an actor and not a jazz musician was happenstance, but, as he once admitted "he was no Lester Young". An incisive and eloquent personality with a uniquely expressive baritone voice, Cathey was to bring a soulful dignity and often unexpected sense of humour to a wide variety of roles on both stage and screen. Cathey attended the University of Michigan and later studied acting at the Yale School of Drama. The theatre remained his lifelong passion and New York his preferred place of residence. As he later explained: "I learned how to act at Yale but learned how to be an actor in NYC. I escaped wandering lost in the desert that is Los Angeles after a decade (which I'll never get back) and being psychically traumatized, I didn't audition for film and television, immersing myself in the 'Classics.'" And so, Cathey went on to tackle diverse (non-stereotypical) roles, ranging from Prospero in a musical version of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' to 'Red' Redding in a British production of 'The Shawshank Redemption' (a part made famous by Morgan Freeman in the film version). Though performing more often than not in New York, Cathey did ultimately return to Hollywood. His formidable screen characters have often been marked by a uniquely erudite fierceness. They have included powerful authority figures, scientists and occasional villains in films (The Mask (1994), Tank Girl (1995), Se7en (1995), Fantastic Four (2015)) and shows like The Wire (2002), Outcast (2016) and House of Cards (2013) (his recurring role as Freddy Hayes, owner of Frank Underwood's favourite BBQ joint and secret hangout, which won him an Emmy Award in 2015 as Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series). In keeping with his credo that "the dark stuff is fun", he also proved excellent value as a shadowy keeper of secrets ('The Caretaker') in an episode of The Blacklist (2013) and as the top-hatted zombie master Baron Samedi, in an episode of Grimm (2011). One of his most poignant roles came near the end as the estranged father of Luke Cage (2016). Not long after, Reg E. Cathey passed away as a result of lung cancer in February 2018 at the untimely age of just 59, never having had the chance of fulfilling his longstanding ambition to play a baritone saxophonist.

Dark, curly-haired, well-chiseled Reg Lewis started professional body-building at a very young age, a title-holder ("Junior Mr. Olympics") by age 17. A favorite model in physique magazines, the incomparable Mae West took a gander at the handsome hulk while he was working out at the gym one day and added him to her collection of absurdly-muscled, Adonis-like figures for her nightclub act in 1954, along with Mickey Hargitay, Gordon Mitchell and Dan Vadis. Ms. West and her beefcake entourage thrilled the all-female audiences as they toured throughout the U.S. Over the years Reg often acted as Mae's escort as well, accompanying her to assorted film premieres, nightclub openings, etc. During this time he also added a number of fitness trophies to his mantle - Mr. Olympics (1956), Mr. Universe (1957), Mr. America (1963) and Mr. America Over Forty (1983). In 1962, he tried, like others, to muscle in on Steve Reeves' territory by acting in Italian films. Reg appeared as the titular hero in Maciste contro i mostri (1962) [Fire Monsters Against the Son of Hercules], where, as Maxus, he battles a swarm of fire-breathing creatures to save the residents of a remote valley. This badly-dubbed pic fared no better or worse than any others, but Reg did not appear in any others. He did appear (actually posed is more like it) in The Brass Bottle (1964) with Burl Ives and Barbara Eden, Don't Make Waves (1967)_ with Tony Curtis and the late Sharon Tate, and Sextette (1977) with Ms. West but it led to no other offers. Reg Lewis dedicated himself to the sport of bodybuilding for over 30 years.
The future Italian epic star was registered as Roy Park in 1928, but little Reg was soon re-named after his father Reginald Park Snr., a well-known gymnasium proprietor in Leeds and owner of the Reg Park Barbell Company. Reg Jnr. played reserve team football for Leeds United before turning to body-building in 1946. He finished Mr Universe runner-up to future film rival Steve Reeves in 1950, then won the title outright in 1951, 1958 and 1965. After marrying South African-born Mareon Isaacs in Johannesburg in 1952, the Parks moved permanently to South Africa where Reg ran a chain of fitness studios. In December 1960 he was invited to Rome to star in two back-to-back Hercules movies, Ercole alla conquista di Atlantide (1961) followed immediately by Ercole al centro della Terra (1961). Since these were directed by intellectually acclaimed veterans Vittorio Cottafavi and Mario Bava, Reg Park himself became something of a cult personality in the Italian epic genre. His friend and protege Arnold Schwarzenegger considered Park to be the best of the "peplum" heroes. Three more sword-and-sandals followed, including Maciste nelle miniere del re Salomone (1964) which, handily for Park, was filmed on location in South Africa.
