Born of a French mother and English father, Philip has dual nationality and is bilingual in English and French. Having obtained a scholarship to The Haberdashers' Aske's School, Elstree he was awarded an RAF Flying Scholarship, learning to fly aged 17. He then worked as a flying instructor, airline pilot, VIP Handling Agent for the rich and famous, legal interpreter, encyclopedia salesman and customer service manager before becoming an actor in 1994. In 2003, Philip set up a project to help disaffected young adults at a local school with their interview and personal impact skills. He is working towards publishing his memoir Blue Sky, Red Carpet.

Forced to retire after suffering an injury while on stage in Holland 1955, he lived out the rest of his life in relative seclusion. Dogged by ill health (phlebitis) in post-war years, he suffered the first of a series of heart attacks in 1945.
